Ingredients

- 1 lb ground lamb (or beef for cottage pie)
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 carrots, diced
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp thyme
- 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 4 tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Boil potatoes until tender, then mash with butter and milk. Season with salt and pepper.
- Brown the ground meat in a skillet, then remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, sauté onions, carrots, and garlic until softened.
- Add tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Simmer for 5 minutes.
- Return meat to skillet, add peas, and cook for 2 more minutes.
- Transfer meat mixture to a baking dish and top with mashed potatoes.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a crispier top, broil for the last 2-3 minutes.
- Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days.
- Substitute sweet potatoes for a variation.
