Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground lamb (or beef for cottage pie)
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Boil potatoes until tender, then mash with butter and milk. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Brown the ground meat in a skillet, then remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, sauté onions, carrots, and garlic until softened.
  5. Add tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Return meat to skillet, add peas, and cook for 2 more minutes.
  7. Transfer meat mixture to a baking dish and top with mashed potatoes.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  9. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a crispier top, broil for the last 2-3 minutes.
  • Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days.
